Census will have large impact
To the editor:
I am writing to invite all community members to participate in next week's Town Hall, to hear and discuss information on redistricting proposals for our state, and how 2010 U.S. Census data will help define congressional districts in Ohio.
The importance of an accurate census is of vital importance for Ohio, which is the only state in danger of losing two congressional districts during the redistricting process. The outcome of the approaching census will also determine how federal program money is distributed to local jurisdictions. In addition, census data are key to shaping public policy decisions about land use, economic and workforce development, housing and transportation planning. We will learn more about Ohio's redistricting proposals from Anne Nelson of the League of Women Voters Ohio. Betty Haliburton of the U.S. Census will provide details about the census.
The Brennan Center for Justice web site (New York University School of Law) provides helpful analysis of two proposed amendments to Article XI of the Ohio Constitution, which governs redistricting (http://tinyurl.com/ycrajwo).
Another key aspect of the Town Hall is awarding certificates of appreciation to people who have had a sustained, positive influence on Oberlin's community. This year's honorees are Booker Peek, for his work with WAVE; and the entire group that is Community Peace Builders, represented by Gil Miranda, and Don and Nancy Hultquist.
I urge all Oberlinians to participate in the Town Hall: celebrate the achievements of the honorees, and learn how redistricting and census data will affect us and our community. Join us on Tuesday, March 16, 7-8:30 p.m., at The First Church, UCC, Fellowship Hall. Refreshments will be available at 6:45 p.m.
This is the Third imPACT Town Hall sponsored by the League of Women Voters Oberlin Area, with funding from the Joyce Foundation and the LWV Ohio Education Fund. NOW Oberlin Chapter is a co-sponsor of the event.
