Phoenix outscore foes 41-6 in doubleheader here
With rain the night before and more forecast for late in the afternoon, the Phoenix hosted St. Martin in a twinbill Saturday at the Oberlin High School field - looking to take care of business on the diamond between the drops.
In this encounter, coach Lynn Gray's Phoenix came out quickly and turned the first game into a romp. Multi hit games by several players, including Mason Smith, Zach Walsh and Drew Randleman, along with some miscues in the field by St. Martin turned the game in Oberlin's favor. Gray emptied his bench in the third inning and the score continued to mount, with Liam McMillin, PJ Presti, Tommy Brewster, and Sam Annable adding to the attack. When the dust settled after five innings the Phoenix claimed game one, 21-3. Drew Randleman went the distance for the win.
After a quick lunch provided by the Oberlin parents, the teams got back at it, knowing that the rain would be coming anytime. Swinging freely, the Phoenix again batted around early and put up some gaudy numbers. St. Martin did some scoring of their own in the nightcap, but the Phoenix would prevail behind the pitching of Jaron Hicks and Erickson Andrews. Amid the raindrops, Oberlin earned a victory in the second game 20-3.
Assistant coach Erik Halm was glad to see a number of his JV players see a little varsity time.
"It's great experience for these boys to come out and play at the next level. They acquitted themselves very well. I was really impressed with the St. Martin team as well - they're a young team and a new program - but these kids were out here bustin' even when they got down, they were learning and encouraging each other all afternoon," Halm said.
The two wins put the team's record at 5-10 overall, 0-7 in conference. This week, the Phoenix tangle with conference foes Keystone and Buckeye. The Bucks come to town on Wednesday, first pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
