Bremke places sixth at District competition

Mason Bremke, 189, a two-time District Qualifier, earned a sixth place finish at the Division III District wrestling tournament. Bremke went 2-3 on the weekend and failed to qualify for the State Tournament.

Since capturing the Sectional crown the week before, Bremke was guaranteed a chance to wrestle a fourth-place finisher from another sectional in his first match. He cruised through this match with a first period pin in 1:25.

In his next match, Bremke was paired with the Northwestern District third-place finisher Treg Grubb. Bremke wrestled a very aggressive match and won an exciting 13-10 decision. With this win a top-six finish and a spot on the podium was guaranteed.

His semifinal match was with the predicted state champion, Kurt Schaefer (Northwestern). Schaefer lived up to his ranking by pinning Bremke in 1:50.

Bremke then dropped to the consolation semifinals to wrestle Jon Schaefer (Chanel) who placed third last weekend at the Brooklyn sectional. With a win, a fourth place finish and a trip to Columbus was guaranteed.

Taking an early 2-1 lead in the first period, Bremke added 5 points in the second with an escape, a reversal and back points. The score was 7-4 heading into the third period. Schafer added a reversal and cut the lead to 7-6. Bremke earned an escape and held an 8-6 lead with time ticking slowly away. In a scramble, Schaefer got a takedown with only 2 seconds left in the match. This sent the match into sudden overtime. Bremke executed a takedown attempt and looked like he was going to score it, but Schaefer countered it and got the takedown and the victory.

Bremke's final match for the state alternate spot was a rematch with Grubb. This time Grubb had the upper hand and pinned Bremke in 2:37.

Bremke ends his season with a District sixth place medal to his accomplishments. He finishes with a 38-14 record with 74 takedowns and 24 pins.

The final wrestling function of the season will be the Lorain County Coaches and Officials Association All Star match. Southview will be hosting this year's meet on Thursday, March 11. Oberlin representatives will be juniors Erickson Andrews, Matthew Gerhardinger, Mason Bremke and senior Colin Styer.
