The sounds of fiddles and guitars filled Show Barn Four Saturday afternoon at the Lorain County Fair as participants competed in the 13th Annual Fiddle Contest. Despite its name, the contest had eight categories including other types of instruments. There was a picking class for guitar, banjo, and mandolin players, as well as a novelty class for other instruments such as the spoons or an accordion. Fiddlers played three songs each (except in the beginner class, which played two). Judges consider authenticity, rhythm and timing, clarity and tone quality, expression and creativity, difficulty and mastery, and overall impression. Doug Allen spearheaded the creation of the fiddle contest and has been running it ever since.
