Columbia Gas will offer free energy audits to all Oberlin residents through Dec. 31.
The offer is exclusive to Oberlin and comes in the wake of energy audit blitzes in May and September by Providing Oberlin With Efficiency Responsibly. Those addressed 32 homes.
The audits cost $50, which is refunded if homeowners follow through with recommended retrofits. Homeowners also will get installed free low-flow showerheads and a programmable thermostat.
Reducing energy waste could help Oberlin win the $5 million Georgetown University Energy Prize, for which the city is one of 50 semifinalists.
“Winning the $5 million prize would be amazing for Oberlin but the real prize is the permanent savings and comfort delivered to families by weatherizing their homes,” said Oberlin Project executive director Sean Hayes.
The U.S. Department of Energy has said that weatherization saves homeowners an average of $400 per year on their energy bills, according to POWER.
Greg Jones, Oberlin’s energy advocate, is available to any Oberlin resident for free consultation and a walkthrough, and can be reached at 440-935-0995.
Columbia Gas customers can schedule an audit by calling 877-644-6674. Rebates offered typically cover 60 percent of the cost of energy efficiency upgrades.
