The final push to opening day at the Peter B. Lewis Gateway Center is underway.

Workers are aiming for April 1, but have until the end of the first week of the month to make the building ready for guests and customers, said Christopher Noble of Smart Hotels, the company serving as project developer.

“The building is enclosed 100 percent,” he said. Only a small number of windows and some wood facing remain to be installed on the Rt. 58 side.

Noble said the large windows that have not been installed in the 300-person conference room on the second floor overlooking Tappan Square are optical windows. They will open and close to let in fresh air.

Seventy guest rooms will be located on the second, third, and fourth floors of the hotel along East College Street.

“The second floor is largely done,” Noble said. “We are waiting for the radiant ceiling panels.”

Those are expected to arrive at the end of this month. Carpeting and furniture will begin to arrive in the middle of January.

The plan is for workers to finish the second floor and work their way up to the third and fourth.

The 100,000-square-foot facility also features a 9,500-square-foot retail space along East College Street and a restaurant and bar area facing Rt. 58. Kitchen equipment is expected to arrive in February.

“One of the biggest things we are doing right now is starting up the mechanical equipment,” Noble said. That includes boilers, ventilation systems, and the geothermal wells.
