Smoke was visible from three miles Thursday as Elyria South Storage burned in Amherst Township.

The black cloud filled the sky over 9109 Leavitt Rd., where metal siding and roofing curled back as flames leaped across the top of the building.

Starting just before noon, Amherst firefighters used a ladder truck to fight the blaze from the sky. They were joined by fire crews from South Amherst, Oberlin, and Florence, Carlisle, Camden, and Elyria townships.

Rescuers fought the blaze from the side door and storage doors on the north side of the building.

Joe Abraham said he was on the roof with his crew working when a man downstairs came out yelling there was a fire. “I am glad they did that because we got off in time,” he said.

The blaze ignited in the front storage unit on the north side and Abraham’s men had a ladder on the opposite end of the building.

“We were working on a tractor and it went up in flames,” said Jason Fisher, who was inside the storage unit with Matt Sayler. Fisher said Sayler suffered second or third degree burns but he was not injured.

The tractor was not on as the two men worked on it.

“I didn’t know how bad it was,” Fisher said of the fire. “It just went up in flames.”

Adam Hicks was one of the men on the roof with Abraham when the fire erupted. “I never experienced anything like that,” he said. “It was crazy.”
