Ratsy Kemp is eager to open her new shop this Saturday.

After 10 years of sharing space with Campbell House Antiques on South Main Street, Ratsy Kemp is moving her business nine doors up the street.

She will open Ratsy’s Store where the former Simply Elegant Candle and Gift Shop once stood at 29 South Main St.

Kemp sells a wide range of items from crazy socks to sunglasses, postcards, clothes, knick-knacks, ties, shoes, and records. The same will be offered at the new location with a few additions: more men’s socks and socks with weird sayings.

“I wanted to be closer to town and more activity,” Kemp said of relocating next door to the Swerve Bike Shop. “It seemed like I would do better here.” She was also ready for her own store.

In 2005, Kemp said Alan Campbell saw what she was selling at her house and on Ebay, and suggested she sell them at his store. Kemp was the first person upstairs at the antique store near Oberlin city hall.

The new location is one level and will allow Kemp to see what every shopper is doing and to better interact with them.

Kemp said that is one part of being at the antique store she didn’t like — shoppers would be upstairs trying on clothes and laughing but she could not see them because she was downstairs helping someone else.

Before the doors officially opened, resident Bert Latran was the first person to purchase an item from Kemp at the new store, a big one way street sign. He gave Kemp an additional one dollar bill and signed it for her to frame and hang behind the cash register in remembrance of her first sale in the new building.

Kemp has been teasing shoppers with quirky window displays and covering the remaining windows to build suspense about what’s inside. She only had a small window display area at Campbell’s but now has two large windows.

“I’m ready to open,” Kemp said with a huge smile stretching across her face. The new Ratsy’s Store location will open at 11 a.m. Saturday.
