Four years and nine months — that’s how long former Oberlin teacher Jacob Garlock will spend in a federal prison.

The 27-year-old, a former first grade teacher at Eastwood Elementary, was sentenced on a child pornography conviction Thursday by judge Christopher Boyko in U.S. District Court in Cleveland.

Diana Steele, an Oberlin mother whose daughter attended a kindercamp class run by Garlock, was in the gallery.

She’s thankful he will never be a teacher again, and noted how “horrified and ashamed” Garlock appeared. “He was very remorseful,” she said.

Also in attendance were several supporters, including the defendant’s fiancee.

They listened as Garlock was given 57 months jail time, five years of supervised release, a $100 fine, and was ordered to get mental health treatment.

Garlock will also have to register as a sex offender.

He was immediately taken into custody by a U.S. marshal.

In court documents, defense attorneys asked that their client receive home detention rather than jail time, painting Garlock as a one-time offender who complied with investigators.

They argued that his “offense conduct was ‘self-reported’ to a law enforcement agency,” he gave total access to all his computing devices, and that he cooperated with the FBI.

His lawyers said he was not involved in sexual misconduct with his Oberlin students but was privately wrestling with a foot fetish.

He did have images depicting “prepubescent females in provocative and inappropriate settings and surroundings,” the defense admitted.

Garlock was “ashamed of his obsessions and misconduct” and had been receiving counseling before he was questioned by law enforcement, the documents stated.

Oberlin Schools leaders discovered early last year that Garlock was the target of an investigation. He was placed on leave on Feb. 13, 2015, and later resigned, also surrendering his Ohio teaching license.

He had recently found full-time employment at Akro Mills, a Wadsworth factory.
