Oberlin College alumni Don Van Dyke and Mary Louise Van Dyke were honored May 23 at Oberlin College’s graduation ceremony.
The couple, both 1947 graduates, have been involved in multiple causes in Oberlin, said Jan Miyake, an associate professor of music theory who presented them with the Award for Distinguished Service to the Community.
She said their volunteerism has included recruiting medical personnel to Oberlin in the 1970s, organizing a hymn festival for thousands of elderly people, helping bring Kendal at Oberlin to the community, and organizing youth choral singing and liturgical weaving.
The Van Dykes have also done missionary work in the Dominican Republic, Honduras, and India. They have lived at Kendal since 1993.
“This longtime Oberlin couple quietly goes about their business performing thousands of acts of kindness,” Miyake said.”Their impact on our community is undeniable.”
