Protesters deliver request to halt Confederate flag sales

A group of protesters delivered a written request Friday to halt sales of the Confederate flag at the Lorain County Fair.

Two members of the group, Achilles Morales and Melissa Sawyer, also attended a discussion on hate speech and the flag Aug. 23 at Wellington’s First United Methodist Church.

Sawyer, a former Wellington resident now working as a teacher in Cleveland, said she and her group didn’t encounter much opposition as they made their way through the fairgrounds aside from a few distant calls of “all lives matter.”

“Everything has been going pretty well so far besides some side comments,” she said. “There’s been nothing threatening. We’ve just been walking around with our messages on our shirts and that’s about it.”

The group, donning Black Lives Matter signs on their shirts, asked fair board members in their letter to consider the historical legacy of the flag extending beyond the Civil War.

“One of the reasons history continues to repeat itself is because we continue to rewrite it,” the letter read. “The flag you call the Confederate flag wasn’t even the actual flag of the Confederacy. It is the flag of Robert E. Lee’s army of northern Virginia that was later adopted by segregationists and nationalists as a symbol of hatred in the Jim Crow era. And now, this battle flag is present at all major rallies held by the KKK and neo-Nazis. Ask yourselves, is that the history you want to celebrate?”
