Human skeletal remains were found Wednesday afternoon along West Road in New Russia Township.
A deer hunter stumbled on the cache of bones just before 1 p.m. while walking in a wooded area north of Parsons Road, according to Det. Donald Barker of the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office.
The county detective bureau and coroner’s office located the “skeletonized remains” of an unidentified person.
No flesh remained, said Barker — and finding a body in this condition is not common.
Processing a crime scene is a lengthy process, he said. It involves documentation of the conditions at the scene and the collection of any physical evidence that could illuminate what happened.
Deputies secured the scene at dark, picking the investigation up again Thursday. The remains were removed to the coroner’s office.
The gender, age and race of the deceased are unknown at this time. It has not been determined how long the remains had been in the area.
Further investigation will be carried out by the detective bureau and the coroner’s office. Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 440-329-3742.
