* THE FREEDOM READERS PROGRAM featuring books from the Coretta Scott King Award Collection, which are written and illustrated by African Americans, as well as other African American readings and media materials for students in preschool through grade 12 are on display at the library From Monday, Feb. 1 through Thursday, Feb. 25.
* SALUTE THOSE who make Oberlin special by nominating a deserving individual, organization or business for an Oberlin Heritage Center Community Award. Categories include Community Historian, Heritage Guardian, Heritage Center Volunteer of the Year, Community Teacher of the Year, History Teacher of the Year, Business Leader Service Award and Youth Community Service Award. * NINETEENTH CENTURY CLUB meets on Tuesday, Feb. 2 at 12:30 p.m., the Nineteenth Century Club will hold its anniversary luncheon at Mr. Zion Parish Hall, hosted by Dolores Randleman and Mary Van Nortwick. Guest speakers will be John Cavanaugh and Robert Murphy on the topic, "Inventing the Modern Piano."
* ECLECTIC READERS Book Discussion Group will meet at the Oberlin Public Library on Tuesday, Feb. 2, at 3:30 p.m. The book to be discussed is Edna Ferber's "So Big." All welcome.
* LIFEBUILDERS FOURSQUARE CHURCH meets at the Seventh-day Adventist Church on 99 S. Park St. Sunday morning praise and worship starts at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday night men's Bible study is at 7 p.m.
* PEACE COMMUNITY CHURCH 44 E. Lorain St. The Rev. Steve Hammond will lead this Sunday's Communion Worship Service which begins at 10 a.m. Children meet for Children's Church during worship. Sunday, Feb. 7: What a Difference a Decade Makes: A panel discussion about how life has changed over the last few decades. It is also Souperbowl Sunday. Bring a non-perishable food item for a local food pantry.
* OUUF LIFESPAN FAITH DEVELOPMENT Program will present "Cakes for the Queen of Heaven" on Tuesdays, from Feb. 9 to April 6, at 8 p.m. at the OUUF office, 181 W. College St. The first known, evidently sacred images were female. Goddess worship appears to have lasted for millennia in human antiquity before the age of written history. Somewhere along the line, God became male, with significant consequences for both women and men. "Cakes" was written as a UU adult education course in the 1980s, and has recently been updated. All are welcome.

* PARK STREET SEVENTH-DAY Adventist Church, 99 S. Park St. Prayer Service is Wednesday at 7 p.m. Join us this Sabbath (Saturday) for Friends and Family Day. Sabbath School is Saturday at 9:30 a.m. followed by Divine Worship at 11 a.m. There will be a potluck lunch after service and the Sunshine Band will visit Welcome Nursing Home at 3 pm.
* BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP, open to all, meets Wednesday, Feb. 10, at 6:30 p.m., at the Oberlin Public Library. The book to be discussed is "Three Cups of Tea : One Man's Mission to Fight Terrorism and Build Nations -- One School at a Time," by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin. New York : Viking, 2006. This discussion, sponsored by the National Organization of Women Oberlin Chapter, is a preamble to a celebration of International Women's Day on Saturday, March 6, with a luncheon at Kendal at Oberlin. Greg Mortenson's work to educate girls in Afghanistan will be considered more thoroughly at the luncheon.

* NEWS AND VIEWS The February meeting of this foreign affairs discussion group will be Friday, Feb. 5, from 10:30 a.m. to noon in the Kendal at Oberlin auditorium. Ira Steinberg, professor emeritus of philosopy at Oberlin College, will lead the discussion on Special Envoys based on The Foreign Policy Assn. briefing book, "Great Decisions." Sponsored by the Center for LifeLong Learning, the group is free and open to the public.
* THE OSCARS: Academy Awards Past and Present. Clips of great movies of the past and 2009 movies nominated for Best Picture will be reviewed and discussed. Class will vote prior to the Oscar telecast and discuss results the final day of class. Terry Meehan, film expert and teacher at northeast Ohio colleges, will lead the discussions. This five-session class, sponsored by the Center for LifeLong Learning, will be held at Kendal at Oberlin on Mondays, 10:30 a.m. to noon, Feb. 8 to Mar. 8 The fee is $35.
