The Oberlin Rotary Club honored LeAundra Richardson and Dyani Sabin as Oberlin High School Seniors of the Month at their Nov. 20 meeting at the Oberlin Inn.
Outstanding seniors with good academic records who have participated extensively in extracurricular and community activities are selected monthly. Rotary looks for those who embody the Rotary motto: Service Above Self. These students are then given the opportunity to select a charity to which the local club gives $50 in their name.
Richardson, a member of the National Honor Society, is involved in Drama Club, and has participated in the marching band as a snare drummer. She is also a member of Tri-M Music Honor Society since her sophomore year, and runs track.
Outside school, she has been a four-year member of the MAD Factory and the Baldwin Wallace Junior and Senior Youth Orchestra.
Although still applying to college, Richardson is leaning to Baldwin Wallace and a degree in music, music education, and theater. She is active in the service projects of the various organizations to which she belongs.
Sabin, also a member of the National Honor Society, also participates in marching band, the Tri-M Music Honor Society, and Drama Club, of which she is president. In addition she is a member of Art Club and the Gay-Straight Alliance and is co-captain of the Academic Challenge team.
Her outside activities include horseback riding, a part-time job at Ben Franklin, and giving art lessons. Service projects find her painting downtown banners and ornaments for the Festival of the Trees, giving free music lessons, and participating in Christmas concerts at Concord Manor and Welcome Nursing Home.
Academic plans have Sabin applying to liberal arts schools, with a special hope for Carleton College in Minnesota, and looking to a professional life that will bring all her diverse interests together.
Sabin plans to give her $50 to the Oberlin School Orchestra. When asked how she'd like to be remembered, she said, "As someone who was always willing to smile.
Richardson designated her money for Hospice of the Western Reserve. "I would like to be remembered by my classmates and teachers as a person who really cared about my friends and about school."
