OYC taught kids to achieve goals

To the editor:

As a resident of the city of Oberlin, I would like to encourage the city to re-establish Oberlin Youth Council.

During the time my children were in Oberlin schools, they were both members of Oberlin Youth Council. Mr. Larry Thomas, and Mr. Don Fenderson were the adult advisors when my daughter was involved. I was very interested in the activities and my daughter was very excited about the activities and camaraderie she experienced! When my son became involved, Mr. Thomas and Mr. Fenderson retired as advisors. I became one of the advisors along with a few other parents.

Not only did the kids have fun, but they took ownership of being residents of Oberlin. They learned how to have meetings, how to write a mission statement, how to set achievable goals, and how to achieve those goals. I believe that they formed relationships that also helped each of them with their future plans for life. As adult advisors, we were there to guide the youth and encourage them to do things that would help them later in life.

Having a youth council is a worthwhile endeavor. The children are our future. I hope that there is serious consideration to re- establish this group.
