A young Lady Phoenix volleyball team lost its home opener Monday in straight sets to Hearts for Jesus.
The Oberlin girls came out strong and led most of the first set.
Anna Cameron, Aszure Chamberlin, and Bailey Wilbanks took the young team under their wings and led them through three tough sets.
Wilbanks went up for spike after spike to give the girls a 15-14 lead in the first set over the Guardians. Hearts for Jesus took over after a timeout to seal a 25-18 win.
Freshman Alia Beckman’s strong serving gave Oberlin an early 6-1 lead in the next game but the Guardians took advantage of breakdowns and miscommunication between the Lady Phoenix to take a 12-8 lead.
Oberlin’s Mar’Reiyonn Froust broke Hearts for Jesus’ run with a kill in the back corner, but it was not enough as the Lady Phoenix dropped the second set 25-15.
Cameron took over the net for the Lady Phoenix in the third set with spike after spike. She also blocked aggressively and had a kill early in the set to tie it 3-3.
The Guardians jumped to a 11-9 advantage but the Lady Phoenix never backed down and tied the set 13-13.
Oberlin was right in the game but did not have enough to defeat Hearts for Jesus as they lost 25-19.
The Lady Phoenix will host the Wellington Dukes at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
