The Phoenix boys varsity basketball team clinched second place Friday in the Patriot Athletic Conference Stripes Division.
Oberlin defeated the Lutheran West Longhorns 63-51 to improve to 12-4 in the conference and 16-5 overall.
Sophomore Justin Smith had an outstanding game for Oberlin, leading the team with 18 points.
The Phoenix took an 18-10 lead after the first quarter and matched the Longhorns shot-for-shot before halftime, making it 27-19. Oberlin took off in the second half, outscoring Lutheran West 23-15 in the third period.
The Longhorns fought back in the final quarter of the PAC match-up and outscored the Phoenix by five points — not enough to cut Oberlin’s lead.
Caleb Hughley and Malik Aguiniga combined for 23 points to help secure Oberlin’s 12th conference win of the season.
Hughley led the team this season in the conference with 216 points and averaged 14.4 points per game. Donald Johnson finished closely behind him with 199 points.
The Phoenix will travel to Rocky River to face the Pirates in their final regular season game at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
The boys will then face the winner of Wellington vs. Rittman in the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division III district tournament at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 26 at Oberlin High School.
