Defense, defense, defense — the Phoenix proved Monday that the best way to win is to never let their opponent have the ball. No. 1-ranked Oberlin, succeeding where the Wellington Dukes failed Friday, dismantled No. 3 Rittman in a 55-28 showcase. It started with a 21-5 first quarter and escalated to a 30-18 halftime lead. The Indians were non-starters, finding no openings and being solidly blocked out of the paint. After being denied a trip to the Division III district final, they bow out with a 17-8 record. “Hats off to @OberlinPhoenix on tonight’s win.You guys are a darn good basketball team with a top notch coach,” the Rittman team tweeted late Monday. Oberlin, meanwhile, will go on to defend its district title against the winner of Tuesday’s game between Northwestern and Orrville. The Phoenix will take the court at 7 p.m. Friday at Wooster High School.
