Eighteen players will fill out the Lady Phoenix volleyball roster.
The large numbers will allow Oberlin to have its first junior varsity team in years.
“I’m excited we have a JV team,” said first year head coach Mason Cooley.
Oberlin has 11 freshman on the team this year, which is the same number of girls who played last season.
The Lady Phoenix only have four girls returning this year — Anna Cameron, Aszure Chamberlin, Baily Wilbanks, and Sarah Parsh.
“All four of them have helped out a lot with tryouts and teaching the other girls,” Cooley said. “All four of them have stepped up. I’m relying on them to bring people up to speed.”
Last season, the girls earned their first win in more than 30 games. Cooley is looking to build the teams winning streak.
Cooley decided to have seven girls on his varsity squad. Three of those girls are freshmen.
“The three freshman that are moving up, they are putting the time in and working hard,” Cooley said.
Cooley is looking to improve the team’s equipment this season and unite the high school program with the middle school team.
The Lady Phoenix will host Hearts for Jesus Christ for their home opener at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 24.
