Mariann Thome and Raymond Smith are this year’s senior citizen king and queen of the Lorain County Fair.

They were crowned by Junior Fair king Austin Washburn and queen Katie Cline.

Nearly 50 people gathered Thursday in the pavilion near the grandstand to meet the royal nominees.

Queen candidates were Mary Ann Feeley of the Northridge Health Center and Thome of Wesleyan Village. King candidates were Smith of the Northridge Health Center and David Kauf of Wesleyan Village. Runners-up were pinned with flowers.

As part of the selection process, members of the royal court spoke briefly on what they enjoy most about the fair.

Thome said she loves eating all of the food that she cannot eat at home. She also loves the chance to see and pet the animals.

“I raised bernese mountain dogs and siamese cats,” she said.

The 100-year-old king was full with excitement after hearing his name called and being crowned. Smith said with a wink that he has been single for 20 years.

“I could still shake the girls if they’d slow down,” he said.

Ninty-year-old Feeley loves to crochet, listen to music, and watch television. “I do a lot of crochet work,” she said. “I make scarves and booties for babies.” Her favorite type of music is Polka.

Kauf said he has always enjoyed visiting the fair and seeing all of the animals. “I love the horses,” he said, and was eager to stroll through the barns. “I’m glad to be here.”
