70-year-old Oberlin cyclist killed in weekend hit-skip on Butternut

A 70-year-old man was killed at 4:48 p.m. Saturday after being hit from behind by a car, which fled the scene.

Charles Startup of Oberlin was riding his bicycle down Butternut Ridge Road in New Russia Township when he was struck by a dark colored Ford, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Witnesses told troopers the driver slowed after hitting Startup but then sped away from the scene.

Startup was taken by LifeFlight to Cleveland Metro Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

He had been wearing a safety helmet at the time of the incident, the OSHP confirmed.

The crash is still under investigation.
