An alert neighbor helped Lorain County sheriff’s deputies catch two suspects breaking into a New Russia Township home.
Shannon Matheny, 25, of Elyria, and Chad Blackburn, 28, of Michigan, were charged Dec. 2 with burglary and theft.
Deputies have been investigating a rash of daylight burglaries in New Russia, Carlisle, and Grafton townships. They said Matheny and Blackburn were taken into custody after being caught in the act of burglarizing a home on Oberlin Road.
A neighbor noticed a strange vehicle in a neighbor’s driveway and called deputies.
That car also fits the description of one seen at other burglaries in the townships, which deputies stated in November was a newer model metallic blue Chevrolet with a spoiler on the trunk.
Matheny and Blackburn’s possible involvement in other burglaries is still under investigation.
Deputies are waiting on to hear back about tests on evidence from the other township burglaries that was submitted to the Ohio Attorney General’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Identification Laboratory.
Matheny and Blackburn are being held on a $250,000 bond.
