An Oberlin College alumna will be the first performance of the 2015 Vocal Academy for High School Students at 8 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church of Christ.

Soprano Karen Jesse, a 2004 graduate of the college, will launch the free performance to kick-off the event.

Jesse has had early success on the opera stage and received numerous awards and scholarships, earning first place at the district installment of the Metropolitan Opera Council Auditions.

The Vocal Academy is an annual nine-day summer program that offers training in technique, acting, and musicianship to students 15 years and older.

Students will take classes on how to prepare for auditions, stage deportment, presentation of songs, and acting focusing on song interpretation.

Each student in the academy will perform at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 2 at Warner Concert Hall.
