The next time area kids take a bite of a hamburger they might have a better idea of how it got to their plate.
More than 200 third- and fourth-graders from the Firelands, Wellington, and Keystone schools participated Oct. 12 in Food For America at the Lorain County Fairgrounds.
The annual event aims to educate children on the process of how their food is made.
Firelands Future Farmers of America advisor Shanna Finnegan said the event started in Lorain County in 1997.
“The kids are rotating between 22 different stations,” she said. “We have high school students from Firelands, Wellington, and JVS leading the stations. It’s great for them to get out here in the sun and see farm life first-hand.”
Stations exhibited by the students included dairy and beef cattle, donkeys, miniature horses, draft and saddle horses, and poultry.
Tractors, hunting presentations, and maple syrup production were also part of the rotation.
“Wellington and Keystone aren’t as urban as the schools we used to try and focus on,” said Samantha Ives, a 16-year-old junior at Firelands and secretary of the school’s FFA chapter. “We usually like to focus on urban schools that don’t know a lot about agriculture. That way the kids can learn where their food comes from.”
She said many students she’s come across aren’t properly informed about food production.
“I’ve run into kids who don’t know what animal milk comes from,” she said. “It’s really important that when they come across organizations that are against agriculture and animal processing that they have the information needed to form their own opinion.”
