Staff Report

The man who caused a serious crash Oct. 26 on Rt. 58 in Pittsfield Township has died.

Wayne Mahnke, 66, of Wellington, succumbed to his wounds Saturday at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

He was driving a 1998 Buick Century south near Merriam Road around 2:36 p.m. when he slammed into the back of a 2016 Ford F-350 that had been waiting to make a turn into a driveway, troopers said.

Mahnke had been wearing a seat belt but was still critically injured. He was taken first to Mercy Allen Hospital and then flown to Cleveland.

Kevin Schemp, 59, of Medina, was behind the wheel of the much-larger pickup truck. Also wearing a seat belt, he was not injured.

State troopers say the crash remains under investigation. They do not believe alcohol or drug use to have been a factor.
