The story of Sara Lucy Bagby, the last slave prosecuted under the Fugitive Slave Act, was performed Nov. 30 at the First Church in Oberlin. Born in the early 1840s, Bagby escaped from Virginia in 1860 and was working in Cleveland in 1861 when she was captured, tried, and returned to her slavemaster. After being freed in 1863, she moved to Pittsburgh and eventually returned to Cleveland where she lived until her death in 1906. Robin Pease, who wrote the play, portrayed Bagby.
