Larry Funk comes around a turn at Mid-Ohio to take seventh place.

Local racer Larry Funk finished seventh earlier this month at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington.

It was the 40-year racing veteran’s first race in a newly remodeled BMW E46 M3, which he drove in the SCCA Pro Racing Trans-Am Series.

Funk had to make numerous changes to the car including the motor and frame. He held third place for a majority of the race before colliding with another car, causing his right rear fender to cut into the tire and flatten.

The mid-race replacement dropped Funk to seventh place.

Funk said he was very happy with how the car ran in its first race and also with avoiding a large crash about a third of the way into the event.

He will take to the track again Aug. 29 at Road America in Plymouth, Wis.
