Two students from the Lorain County JVS Adult Career Center’s cosmetology program took gold medals at the recent SkillsUSA Competition in Columbus.

Both will advance to the national leg of the competition to be held this June in Louisville, Ky.

Shantae Byrd of Elyria competed in the nail event. She was judged on her abilities to do both a regular and UV gel manicure, acrylic nails, polish application, nail art, and a pedicure.

Evelyn Grabski of Oberlin competed in the esthetics event. She performed a facial, daytime makeup application, and a fantasy makeup application.

JVS cosmetology students have been competing in the post-secondary division of the SkillsUSA competition for several years. These events help evaluate each contestant’s preparation for employment and recognize outstanding excellence and professionalism in their respective fields.

“We are so proud of Shantae and Evelyn,” said instructor Tina McCullough. “This is just the beginning of what is going to be a wonderful career experience for them and we know they will do an outstanding job as they advance to the national competition.”
