Parking by hotel raises red flags

To the editor:

A simple solution to the downtown parking problem would be to make College Street one-way only between Professor Street and Pleasant Street. Traffic would be eastbound only. This is what Amherst implemented years ago to solve its downtown parking problem.

This would allow diagonal parking for the whole length of the business area, except for parallel parking, which would be in front of the music conservatory on the south side of College Street.

The gain in parking spaces would be as follows starting west and heading east: a total of 64 existing space compared to 116 new.

This plan would be relatively easy and inexpensive to implement, the major costs being signage and paint.
