A fifth set Monday stopped the Lady Phoenix from advancing in the Division III district tournament for the first time in more than four years.
Oberlin faced the Wickliffe Blue Devils in the first round and the teams matched each other point for point through nearly each set.
The Lady Phoenix took the first set 25-20 after getting off to a strong start, but the Blue Devils answered right back taking the second set 25-20. Juniors Aszure Chamberlin and Abi Tackett led their team through each, combining for 22 assists and 48 digs.
The girls dropped the third set in the final point 25-23.
Head coach Mason Cooley regrouped his team before the fourth set and the Lady Phoenix came out swinging and playing great defense at the net with the help of senior Anna Cameron’s four blocks on the night.
Oberlin shut down Wickliffe and took the fourth set 25-15.
The Lady Phoenix tried to keep their momentum alive, but the Blue Devils were able to take the set 15-12 and secure the win to advance in the tournament.
Oberlin combined four nine aces, 28 kills, and 10 blocks against Wickliffe.
A strong Clearview Clippers team last Tuesday was too much for the Lady Phoenix to fight off in their Senior Night game.
The girls had an early back-and-forth battle before the Clippers took over and extended their lead to seal a 25-10 win in the first set and 25-13 in the second.
Senior’s Nya Massey and Anna Cameron stepped up for their team in the third set to keep Oberlin in the game until the very last point.
The Lady Phoenix went on a small run before the Clippers were able to secure a 25-20 win.
