BOYS SOCCER: Phoenix bow out with 7-2 loss in semifinals to Independence

Staff Report

Senior Jack McMillin’s early goal was not enough Tuesday to hold off the Independence Blue Devils in the district semifinals.

The boys dropped a 7-2 loss to the Blue Devils.

Independence scored four unanswered goals by halftime to take a 4-1 lead.

McMillin found the back of the net on a second goal but the Blue Devils added on three more goals to secure the win.

Three goals in the first half assured the Phoenix boys soccer team a 5-1 win over Open Door to advance in the Division III district tournament.

Senior Jack McMillin started the scoring for his team followed by assists to Tam Cadenhead and Justin Mason to take a steady lead after 20 minutes of play.

Open Door tried to find its way back in the game in the second half after scoring a goal but Oberlin’s defense proved too powerful.

Oberlin’s Thayer Preston and Dorian Levine each added a goal to extend the Phoenix lead and advance to the semifinals.
