GIRLS BASKETBALL: Early deficits haunt 0-9 Lady Phoenix

Staff Report

More than a 10-point fourth quarter was needed Saturday for the Lady Phoenix to mount a comeback against the Vermilion Sailors.

Though Vermilion was held to just eight in the final period, they sailed to a 37-24 win on the strength of their comfortable second-half lead.

Oberlin’s girls started off slow, falling 22-9 by halftime. They found their rhythm in the second half and worked their way back into the game, locking Vermilion down to just seven points in the third quarter.

Still, the gap remained 29-14 heading into the final period.

The Lady Phoenix fell to 0-9 on the season.

Sophomore Cameron Payne led her team with 11 points last Wednesday as the Phoenix girls took on the Fairview Warriors.

Oberlin had a one-point lead after the first quarter but the Warriors held the Phoenix to six points before halftime to take a 21-17 lead.

Anna Cameron and Marcala Moore combined for 12 points on the night and helped shut down Fairview in the second half to battle back into the game.

The girls fell short in the final two quarters, losing 33-29.
