Five Oberlin Phoenix athletes participated Wednesday in National Signing Day.
Jillian Doane, Anna Cameron, Jack McMillin, Malik Aguiniga, and Simon Perales signed letters of intent to take their skills to the college level.
McMillin, Cameron, and Doane plan to attend Oberlin College. Aguiniga is going to Ashland University and Perales will head to Haverford College in Pennsylvania.
Doane plans to run track, Perales track and cross country, Cameron basketball, McMillin soccer, and Aguiniga football.
“It’s been a long time coming for me as an athletic director to have a group like them on signing day,” said Ty Stillman.
He has built a relationship with each student who signed and beamed with pride in their accomplishments. “I know these kids and their families very well,” Stillman said.
These five Phoenix athletes will save nearly $750,000 in tuition if they stay at their chosen colleges for four years, Stillman said.
Doane holds the school track record in the 300-meter hurdles and the 400 meter dash. She was First Team All-Patriot Athletic Conference last year and finished 11th at the state track meet in the 300-meter hurdles in 2015.
McMillin was named the Patriot Athletic Conference Player of the Year in 2015 and Second Team All-Ohio, First Team All-District, and First Team All-Patriot Athletic Conference.
Perales holds the school cross country record in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters. He also finished ninth in state in the 1,600 meters this past year and was named First Team All-Patriot Athletic Conference.
Aguiniga has received Honorable Mention All-Ohio, First Team All-District, First Team All-County, and Second Team All-Patriot Athletic Conference recognition.
Cameron received Honorable Mention All-Patriot Athletic Conference for volleyball this past fall and she was in the marching band. Cameron also served as the team captain for both volleyball and basketball this year.
Stillman said this group of individuals has served Oberlin well.
“They are true student athletes,” he said. “They work hard in the off-season. All of these kids are doing something 12 months of the year.”
