The 2015-16 wrestling season came to a close for wrestlers Sam Wilson (182 pounds) and Robert Bouchonville (126) this past weekend at the Division III District Tournament in Garfield Heights.
Wilson gave a gallant effort but came one match shy of placing in the top six.
He had the best showing for a Phoenix wrestler in recent years, going 2-2 for the weekend. He easily won his opening round match via a pin in 51 seconds over the third seed, but lost the quarter final match 9-4 to one of the number one seeds.
On Saturday morning, Wilson rebounded and easily advanced to the consolation quarterfinals with a quick 31 second pin. In the quarterfinals he dropped a close 6-3 decision and with the loss his season came to an end.
His outstanding senior campaign ends with a 32-9 record with a team-leading 19 pins and 35 takedowns.
Bouchonville, who was the district alternate at his weight and got the nod to substitute for a Columbia athlete, took advantage of the opportunity and wrestled an aggressive match, losing by a pin with one second left.
He came back from a 2-0 deficit and wrestled to an 8-8 tie with less than a minute in the match vs. Cardinal. He was pinned when his opponent took him down to his back.
Bouchonville lost his wrestle back match by a pin in 3:12. He ends his first year with a 14-28 record.
Senior Morality Anderson (220), the district alternate at his weight, was not as lucky and did not get an opportunity to participate.
The final wrestling event of the season will be the Lorain County All Star Meet on Thursday, March 10 at Elyria High School.
Oberlin’s hopefuls will be seniors Kobe Fields (22-11), Wilson (32-9), and Anderson (23-12). Wrestling begins at 6 p.m.
