Caleb Hughley and Donald Johnson combined for 41 points Monday on the way to a 74-69 win over Salem Northwestern in round two of the OHSAA playoffs.
The second-seeded Phoenix boys stormed the district semifinals with fast play and an iron-clad defense. Highley led the team with 21 points.
A second-half rally kept the Phoenix in the game as the third-seeded Huskies brought the pressure. With just five minutes remaining on the clock, the tally was tied at 61.
David Payne sank a basket to break loose and his teammates rang up 10 from the free throw line for the go-ahead score.
Now the red and blue are bound for the finals at 7 p.m. Friday at Wooster High School. They will play the winner of tonight’s match-up between Norwayne and Waynedale.
